AIM IM with jsd.
11:51 AM

Charles Truett: rover needs to be able to post its position and sensor data to Chief Willy, which will host the CBTSA website
Charles Truett: what brett said about google earth is gonna help
jsd: you can already see KM L files on google maps
Charles Truett: yeah but i want the map on the site
Charles Truett: served by willy
11:55 AM
jsd: how often is it posting position and sensor data?
Charles Truett: once an hour?
jsd: how far apart?
Charles Truett: how far apart is what
jsd: rover - willy
Charles Truett: the rover from willy?
Charles Truett: miles
Charles Truett: say from my studio to cleveland
Charles Truett: or kefalonia

Charles Truett: i tried to get a biological tracker, but you need special permission
jsd: ok so it'll have to be over the cellular network
Charles Truett: yeah cell is cool
jsd: does it have to submit data every hour? can it be every 12, and on request?
jsd: cause it's 15c a text
Charles Truett: sure why not?
jsd: it's expensive
Charles Truett: well ok
Charles Truett: 15 c x12 per day
Charles Truett: i mean 24
jsd: times two
Charles Truett: not so bad
jsd: times two
jsd: receiving end pays too
Charles Truett: ok
12:00 PM
jsd: it'll add up quickly
Charles Truett: so say the rover is out for 2 weeks
jsd: well that's your call. I can do it.
Charles Truett: it's not so terrible. but once i figure out how everything works i can decide the frequency
jsd: I would need to make some mods to the code
Charles Truett: ok awesome. let's build Red Toby then
Charles Truett: i'll need a new decal
jsd: I haven't done any time based actions
Charles Truett: and i'll need to figure out how to embed the stuff inside the giant ball. but i think i have a good solution for that from before
Charles Truett: isnt' it the same as teh sensor
Charles Truett: ?
Charles Truett: it's just a different trigger
jsd: time is tricky with arduinos
Charles Truett: ok fuck, meeting
jsd: later
12:30 PM
Charles Truett: so when can we get together?
jsd: monday on wards
Charles Truett: huh?
jsd: monday omwards
jsd: onwards
Charles Truett: oh. i thought you wanted to meet me on wards island
Charles Truett: which was awesome
jsd: ha
jsd: MEET ME ON WARDS ISLAND
jsd: BRING THE ROVER AND A LONG COAT
Charles Truett: my day is a disaster
jsd: tigoe finished ITP in 97
jsd: that's amazing
Charles Truett: techno is the CBTSA font
Charles Truett: and I can't find it anymore
Charles Truett: it's a fun little puzzle
jsd: weird
Charles Truett: it's an apple system font
Charles Truett: but nobody has it
Charles Truett: it must have been discontinued from the OS
12:35 PM
jsd: someone must have redone it
jsd: ever heard of domus academy?
Charles Truett: nope
jsd: it's a design school in milan
jsd: what kind of sensors does your rover have?
jsd: and have you figured out the server part yet?
Charles Truett: well you know what I'd really like to do?
Charles Truett: I'd like it to send me audio clips
Charles Truett: and pictures
Charles Truett: but I don't know yet
jsd: um...that might be beyond what I know
Charles Truett: pictures would be enought, and i think it's easier
Charles Truett: well that's no problem
Charles Truett: you can help me with the communication part
Charles Truett: i think sending an MMS instead of and SMS would work for the pictures
12:40 PM
Charles Truett: the audio seems trickier
Charles Truett: i'll reach out to the crew
jsd: yo know what.
jsd: I think I can hack something.
jsd: actually no.
jsd: text messages don't give me enough bandwidth
Charles Truett: sending pictures shouldnt' be that hard really.
Charles Truett: kaho might know how to do this
Charles Truett: she did a lot of work with mobile
jsd: if you can invoke MMS yes
Charles Truett: but simple transmission of position and say, temperature woudl be a good start
jsd: I can't do it with my current system
Charles Truett: it doesn't have to all work at once
Charles Truett: but it would be good to be able to build on the foundation
Charles Truett: rather than have to start over to bring in new stuff
Charles Truett: so there's some research
jsd: so basically you would have to invoke the modem qualities of the phone
jsd: and use GPRS
jsd: then you can do it all
jsd: but that'
12:45 PM
jsd: s gonna be hard
jsd: BUT
jsd: if we figure it out
Charles Truett: is it going to require a mobile plan?
jsd: it'll be an insane foundation
Charles Truett: cause i love that you don't need one for your proejct
jsd: I use pay as you go
Charles Truett: oh. that sounds simple enough.
jsd: but i don't know how pay as you go deals with data
Charles Truett: well ok then. woudl you be willing to put some time into figuring this out with me?
Charles Truett: i know you've got a full plate
jsd: yeah let me figure out my full plate. in the meanwhile, so we don't waste time, I'll make sure you're working on good stuff.
jsd: like you need to get the nokia/arduino connection going.
jsd: but talk to kaho first see what he's got going on.
Charles Truett: i could start by beginning to replicate the aspects of your system that i'm gonna need
jsd: yeah that's what I mean
Charles Truett: awesome
jsd: and it needs to be done better with you because I never got two communication
jsd: but I have the plan for that
Charles Truett: sounds good
jsd: you'll need a nokia phone and a vdip1 module
Charles Truett: ok. ebay?
Charles Truett: any nokia phone?
jsd: the phone? yeah. you need one with a GPRS modem inside.
Charles Truett: groovy
jsd: and the vdip1 is off mouser
Charles Truett: ok, i'll get one
Charles Truett: do you know anybody who's into RC cars?
jsd: what exactly do you want to do
jsd: I have a friend from itp that did some work with remote control planes
Charles Truett: turn my shopping cart into a nitro fuelled remote controlled exploration vehicle
jsd: nitro?
Charles Truett: that's the fuel
Charles Truett: not electric
jsd: I see.
jsd: you're insane.
Charles Truett: man, this shit is fucking fun
jsd: you need to look into the robotics people work.
Charles Truett: i'm gonna try to learn about the BEST robotics program
12:50 PM
jsd: http://www.solarbotics.com/
jsd: BEST ?
jsd: oh wait
jsd: I know best
Charles Truett: yeah, it's awesome
Charles Truett: i want the cart to be powerful
jsd: who's behind BEST
Charles Truett: the guy from that gay scooter thing
Charles Truett: what's his name?
Charles Truett: dean kamen
Charles Truett: http://digg.com/tech_news/Segway_Inventor_Drinks_His_Own_Pee
jsd: RIGHT
jsd: you need to put together a high school team
Charles Truett: it's a movement man
Charles Truett: i'm so excited that i found my way into this
Charles Truett: ok, another meeting
